The Sunbeam Tiger was introduced at the 1964 New York Auto Show and soon entered production. Carroll Shelby was involved in the design of the Sunbeam Tiger and the body of the two-seater sports car was slick and refined. Fitted with the same engine unit as the AC Cobra, the Sunbeam Tiger offered great performance. A second generation of Sunbeam was introduced in 1967 with a Ford 289-cid V8 engine rated at 200-hp. 0-to-60 mph time dropped from 9.5 seconds to 7.5 seconds and the top speed was increased by 5 mph. Although the model was quite popular in the United States, it was discontinued in 1967, following the acquisition by Chrysler. Chrysler had bought into the Rootes group in 1964 and didn’t want to sell a car with a Ford engine. After unsuccessfully trying to replace the Ford engine with a Chrysler unit, the model was dropped.
