The Bentley R Type was referred to as the Mark VII while in development and was introduced in 1952 as the successor to the Mark VI model. The R Type was in production until 1955 and made in 2323 units. Built and assembled at the Crewe factory in England, the Bentley R Type was fitted with a standardized body although a few models were consigned to individual coachbuilders. The front of the car was similar to the Mark VI model but the rear featured a trunk almost twice as big. The same F-head, 6-cylinder, 4.5-liter engine than the previous model was used on the Bentley R Type and was coupled to a four-speed manual transmission standard, with an automatic option. Suspension was independent in the front and used semi-elliptical leaf springs in the rear.
