The Bentley R Type Continental fixed-head coupe was introduced in 1952 and produced along with the Bentley R Type model. At the time, the model was the fastest four-seater in the world, with its top speed of 120 mph. The same F-head, 6-cylinder engine with a capacity of 4.5 liters powered the Continental, with tuned carburetors and a different exhaust. The Continental was a throwback to the low and sleek Bentley tourers from the 1930s. Developed by a team of engineers at Bentley and designers from H.J. Mulliner & Co, the body of the Bentley R Type Continental fixed-head coupe was very aerodynamic. The car was built with a construction system using only steel, instead of the typical ash-frame body. A few chassis were consigned with other coachbuilders of choice.
