Buying a 1956 Mercedes Benz 220S Coupe

1956 Mercedes Benz 220S CoupeThe first Mercedes Benz 220S Cabriolet was introduced to the public at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September 1955. The first production car would roll off the production line in July of 1956, with the Coupes following in October of 1956. The 1956 Mercedes Benz 220S Coupe, also known as the W180, offered a 2.2L inline-six with 99hp, which would later be increased to 105hp with the addition of twin carburetors. The Mercedes Benz 220S was also part of the illustrious Ponton series, which was known for its commanding presence and exceptionally luxurious appointments. While the larger 300 series was even more glamorous, Mercedes saw a market for a less expensive, more personal automobile. To do this, the 220 Sedan chassis was cut down by 4.7 inches, chrome embellishments were added and wood and leather trim was standard. Only 1,251 Mercedes Benz 220S Coupe Ponton models would be produced, making them extremely rare in the classic car market today. It is not estimated how many remain roadworthy in their current conditions.
