Buying a 1960 Austin-Healey 3000

1960 Austin-Healey 3000The Austin-Healey 3000 is perhaps the best known of the Big Healeys. Similar to the 100-6, it came in two variants: the BT7 and the BN7. The BT7 was the four-seat model of which 10,825 were built, and the BN7 was the two-seat model of which 2,825 were built. Manufactured from 1959 to 1961, the Austin-Healey 3000 represents the golden age of the brand, when the cars were being driven to impressive victories and class wins on the European road rally circuit. This is also a period where sports car enthusiasts paid great attention to the Austin-Healey worldwide. If youre looking to own a piece of this unique and illustrious history, the 1960 Austin-Healey 3000 is a great choice. Sometimes called the MKI to differentiate it from the other 3000s that would follow, the 1960 3000 offered a larger and improved engine from its 100-6 predecessor. Front brakes were also changed to disk brakes, in keeping with changes made by Triumph and Jaguar competitors at the time. Other than these changes, the early MKI 3000 was virtually identical visually to the 100-6 except for its badges.

1960 Austin-Healey 3000 Buyers Guide

There are many benefits to buying a 1960 Austin-Healey 3000. It is just as handsome as its 100-6 predecessor, yet offers a bigger and better engine. It is widely recognized as the defining model of the Austin-Healey brand. It has a very distinguished racing history, and there is a wide support system on the Internet for those considering a restoration project. Additionally, parts, while they can be expensive, are generally available for the 3000. There are some things that you should be cautious about, however. For example, weather protection was widely lacking in the automotive industry at the time these 1960s Austin-Healeys were manufactured. Rust and corrosion are likely. Be sure to make an effort to find an example with as little rust as possible. Popular areas for rust include the floor pans, doorsills, wings, and wheel arches. As a smart and savvy buyer, you will also want to inspect the car for any signs of accidents or botched repairs. If not restored properly, these problems can devalue your Healey.
