The Aston Martin DB6 was launched in October 1965 at the London Motor Show. 1,327 examples of the first model, named the Mk I, were made between 1965 and 1969. More spacious than the DB5, this four-passenger Grand Tourer offered power steering, air conditioning and sunroof as an option, which made it a more comfortable and luxurious family car. The high-speed stability of the Aston Martin DB6 increased significantly over its predecessor, thanks to better aerodynamics and the curved Kamm tail. Designed by Tadek Marek, the 4-Liter DOHC (twin-overhead camshaft) straight six-cylinder Aston Martin DB6 engine produces 282 hp at 5,500 rpm. The DB6 also came with the Vantage engine option, which is quoted at 325 hp and reaches a top speed of 155mph (versus a top speed of 145mph for the standard engine).
Looking to purchase a classic Aston Martin?
Owning a classic Aston Martin is an amazing experience, especially when you find a good example. There are a couple of things to know before shopping for this model, however. First, Aston Martin abandoned the superleggera construction from the DB5; therefore the body of the DB6 has aluminum skins and steel floor and inner panels. When looking at a 1965 Aston Martin DB6, make sure to meticulously inspect the car for rust, especially the points of contact between the aluminum body panels and the steel chassis. The Vantage engine option, featuring three Weber carburetors and higher compression ratio cylinder head, adds significant power and torque to the car. This high-power version was available upon order and a “V” for Vantage, was added to the VIN. It is highly sought-after today thanks to its additional power.
