Designed by Colin Chapman, the Lotus Elan was popular for its light body, high handling capabilities, and efficiency. Built on a backbone frame with a fiberglass body, the Elan featured four-wheel independent suspension and disc brakes all around. The Lotus Elan was available as a convertible roadster with an optional hardtop, as a coupe and as a Plus 2 with four seats. The main design cues were the pop-up headlamps and curved windshield. The interior featured a full-width dashboard made from a single piece of walnut wood and providing minimal equipment. Simple, agile, and efficient, the Lotus Elan was an icon of its generation.
