Buying a 1968 Porsche 911L Targa

1968 Porsche 911 L TargaThree new variations appeared to the Porsche 911 line during the 1968 model-year, two of which would be for the European market while one would be for the United States. All of these models would be part of Porsche’s updated A-Series. The 911L would be sent to the American market, replacing the standard issue just after the start of the model-year. The L stood for luxury and would be essentially a 911S model with a normal tuned engine. The 1968 Porsche 911L Targa and Coupe would be a jump in the market, as it sold for $600 more than the previous year’s 911 models, with some of the increase reflecting the new modifications used to meet new emissions and safety standards. Visually, add-on side marker light can help distinguish this car from its predecessors. Europe would also get an L model, as well as a low-priced 911T. All models were offered as both a Targa and Coupe. The 1968 Porsche 911L Targa has a stainless steel-clad roll bar, as Porsche had believed that the U.S. would eventually outlaw fully open convertibles. The name Targa came from the Targa Florio sports car road race in Sicily, Italy in which Porsche had considerable success.
