The Maserati Merak is a mid-engine, 3-liter, 2+2 GT, equipped with a compact V6 mounted longitudinally. A rear tubular sub frame supported the powertrain and rear suspension, and was paired to a steel monocoque. The body was designed by Giugiaro at Italdesign, who previously drew the famous Ghibli and the Merak’s predecessor: the Maserati Bora. From the Bora to the Merak, the most visible modifications were the abandon of the Bora’s complex clamshell engine cover, in favor of the buttress treatment behind the cockpit. A higher-powered Merak SS appeared in U.S. dealerships in 1977. After Citroen let go of their Maserati ownership, a lot of the equipmentespecially the hydraulic partswere left behind for systems that are more traditional. Therefore, the early models of Maserati Merak were quite different from the later cars.
