The Lotus Esprit was made from 1976 to 2004. The models manufactured in 1980 were the Series 2, the Essex Turbo Esprit and the Series 3. The model was based on a concept by Italdesign and all variants used a common set of molds. The original engine was a 2-liter, 4-cylinder unit with an output of 160 hp. From May 1980, the S2.2 model was produced as a stopgap before the arrival of the S3. As its name suggests, an enlarged engine powered the S2.2 with a capacity of 2.2 liters. The Essex Turbo Esprit boasted a new turbocharged, dry-sump engine with an increased output of 210 hp. The next upgrades were the new Turbo Esprit and S3 models, featuring a revised chassis using the configuration of the Essex model as a base.
