The Maserati Merak saw many evolutions throughout its production run, thanks to evolving engineering and change of ownership from Citroen to De Tomaso in the mid 1970s. As a result of this shift of ownership, conventional brakes and a ZF transaxle were substituted, as well as a new dashboard inspired by the one from the Maserati Bora. Wider wheels and tires were also fitted, which improved the handling of the car. Along with a better high-speed stability, performance increased with a boosted horsepower190 to 220 hp. A more powerful variant was introduced in 1976 as the SS, and a 2-liter model followed in 1977 but was only produced for the Italian market in very low numbers.
