The Ferrari 308 GTS was one of the most popular and best-selling Ferraris of all time, and for good reasons. With its aggressive lines, powerful engine and enjoyable driving experience, this 2-seater convertible has become iconic. The 1983 Ferrari 308 GTS featured a beautifully designed targa body type, with a removable roof panel. In order to be in compliance with the US market, which reinforced their emission regulations at the time, Ferrari created a new variant of the 308 GTS without the classic carburetor, introducing a fuel injection system. With this system the Ferrari 308 GTSi lost a decent amount of power, which encouraged Ferrari engineers to work towards an alternative solution. The team created an engine with four valves per cylinder instead of two, which succeeded in recovering some of the lost power. The new model was named the Ferrari 308 GTS (QV), the suffix QV standing for Quattrovalvole (four valves). The new U.S. market cars were rated at 230 hp (while the Euro model was rated at 240 hp) giving extra pep back to the 1983 Ferrari 308 GTS.
Looking to purchase a classic Ferrari?
The Ferrari 308 GTS was highly praised by the public and motoring press in terms of design, but the driving experience is another great feature of this gorgeous convertible. From the transversely mounted engine, to the five-speed, all-synchromesh transmission unit and the unassisted single plate clutch, the 1983 Ferrari 308 GTS QV is a real fun classic to drive. The driver can feel the power coming from the rear wheels through a limited slip differential and driveshaft. Also in 1983, 16″ wheels were offered. These “QV” wheels are now the most sought after retrofit for older 308s, for their more modern look, and because it allows fitting of cheaper and more modern, sticky rubber.
