The Bosch fuel injection was necessary to comply with increasingly tight emission regulations. While this meant a loss in power, the model’s top speed was a satisfying 149 mph. In 1982, the model was upgraded and the engine power raised thanks to new camshaft profiles and exhaust readers. Many improvements were made to the car’s interior as well: the center console was revised and included new electronic switchgear, different upholstery was fitted and door panels were upgraded. Outside, the 1984 Ferrari 400i featured a narrow grille, regular fog lights, and new refined wing mirrors with a small Ferrari shield.
