First introduced as the Dino 308 GT4 in 1973, the car received the Ferrari badging from May 1976, until the end of the model’s production in 1980, when the Mondial 8 replaced the GT4.

The 308 GT4 was the first production Ferrari to boast the mid-engine V8 layout that would become the company’s major success in the following decades, and also the first production Ferrari to be designed by Bertone, rather than Pininfarina. The styling was angular and completely different from the curvaceous lines of the previous Ferrari Dino 246. The design was smart, offering the driver a 360 degree visibility with no blind spots. In addition, the sitting position was made particularly comfortable, the access to the engine was simple and the interior was exceptionally practical and spacious. The chassis of the Ferrari 308 GT4 was based on the Dino 246, and stretched to fit the second row of seats. Niki Lauda famously helped set up the chassis of the 308 GT4.
