First introduced as the Dino 308 GT4 in 1973, the car received the Ferrari badging from May 1976, until the end of the model’s production in 1980, when the Mondial 8 replaced the GT4. The 308 GT4 was the first production Ferrari to boast the mid-engine V8 layout that would become the company’s major success in the following decades, and also the first production Ferrari to be designed by Bertone, rather than Pininfarina. The styling was angular and completely different from the curvaceous lines of the previous Ferrari Dino 246. The design was smart, offering the driver a 360 degree visibility with no blind spots. In addition, the sitting position was made particularly comfortable, the access to the engine was simple and the interior was exceptionally practical and spacious. The chassis of the Ferrari 308 GT4 was based on the Dino 246, and stretched to fit the second row of seats. Niki Lauda famously helped set up the chassis of the 308 GT4.
A total of 2,826 examples of the Ferrari 308 GT4 were built from 1973 to 1980. Small differences exist between the European and American versions; the European version being slightly more powerful (255 hp versus 240 hp). If you’re thinking about buying a Ferrari 308 GT4, you should know about a few things. For example, Ferrari released a factory update in 1975, including technical and cosmetic revisions in many areas. Some examples were upgraded with the complete set of revisions, while some only received a few. Being such a specific model, it is highly recommended to request the help of a classic Ferrari expert when looking at an example. The value of a Ferrari 308 GT4 depends on a long range of factors and in order to make sure you get the best vehicle within your budget, you’ll need a deep pre-purchase inspection.
