The Lamborghini Silhouette was introduced at the Geneva Auto Show in 1976 and was based on the previous Lamborghini Urraco P300. The model was produced from 1976 to 1979 in only 53 unitson top of the two prototypes used for development. The Jalpa model that was heavily inspired by its predecessor replaced the Silhouette. The name Silhouette refers to the Group 5, an FIA motor racing classification for liberal silhouette formula based on homologated production vehicles. Designed by Bertone and intended mainly for the US market, the Lamborghini Silhouette P300 was equipped with reinforced bumpers and a catalytic exhaust. The Silhouette is the first Lamborghini to come with a removable targa top that could be stored behind the seats. Powered by a 3-liter V8 engine, the Lamborghini Silhouette P300 produced an output of 250 hp and top speed was recorded at 162 mph.
Although it had all the desirable features to succeed, the Lamborghini Silhouette P300 didn’t sell very well and only 53 units were made throughout the production run. Lamborghini’s financial and management issues and the reputation for lack of reliability were most likely the main reasons for the low sales. However, the Lamborghini Silhouette P300 is a very desirable classic nowadays, featuring beautiful design, and satisfying performance.
