Buying A Mercedes 280SE 111 Chassis

280SE 111 ChassisLaunched in 1967 and produced until 1971, the Mercedes 280SE 111 Chassis Coupe and Cabriolet models offered buyers an inline-six engine fitted with a fuel injection system, offering 180hp. When the series was introduced, Road and Track Magazine said “one of the best-looking body designs to come from any German concern.” With its beautiful design and exceptional proportion, this series became an instant classic. With the introduction of the 280SE 3.5 Coupe and Cabriolet in 1970, Mercedes gave the existing 280SE a small face-lift. The V8 engine gave Mercedes the chance to lower the grille and made it wider at the same time. The wheel covers and the design of the outside rearview mirror were also modified slightly.

Mercedes 280SE Cabriolet Buyer’s Tips

Before the launch of the Mercedes 280SE 3.5, the Mercedes 280SE 111 Chassis Cabriolet saw 1,390 models roll off the production floor. Because of the high demand for convertibles, many coupes have been cut and converted into convertibles. It is very important to be aware of this and to check your chassis number to ensure the car was originally produced as a Cabriolet. If you are looking to buy Mercedes 280SE Coupe models, this can cost you thousands of dollars if you purchase a false Cabriolet.

Mercedes 280SE Coupe Buyer’s Tips

The Mercedes 280SE 111 Chassis Coupe was a bit more popular, with approximately 3,797 models manufactured before the launch of the 280 SE 3.5 in 1969. As with the 250 models, the 280 had little exterior differentiation from the sedan models and buyers should verify the model using the chassis number and engine specifications. Rust also plays an integral role in the purchase of these vehicles and should be inspected thoroughly to ensure you know what you’re purchasing.
