Buying or Selling a 1968 Intermeccanica Murena

1968 Intermeccanica MurenaNearly a decade after having founded Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica in Turin, Italy, Frank Reisner had experienced a trial by fire in the Euro-American sports car scene and emerged from the ordeal more or less intact. The trained chemical engineer had launched his company in modest fashion only to see it take on an ambitious GT project in collaboration with American Milt Brown. A few lessons in production scaling later and Reisner was back at it with what would become an important and fairly well selling sports car, the Italia. With that undertaking promisingly underway and positioned to do well in American markets, Reisner made a now infamous effort to branch out into unmarked territory with the introduction of a sport wagon.

The 1968 Intermeccanica Murena was as much a design wonder as it was a curiosity. Massive in its dimensions and unmistakable in its origin, the 1968 Intermeccanica Murena was at least interesting in its approach to combining wagon utility with sporty appeal. At around 19 feet in length and nearly two tons in weight, the 1968 Intermeccanica Murena defied consumer expectations in many regards. It was also seemed to have some commercial promise, as the novelty factor alone produced a good deal of enthusiasm for the concept. Also, the Intermeccanica system of plugging powerful American motors into cleverly designed European frames was very much at work, with a thick Ford V-8 pulling the aircraft carrier of a ride down the pavement at respectable top-speeds. Unfortunately for the Murena, it never quite made the leap from interesting ride to purchase-worthy produce; only eleven units were produced.
