The BMW 3.0 CSL

BMW 3.0 CSLThe BMW 3.0 CSL is a sportier version of the BMW 3.0 CS or CSi models. This BMW 3.0 CSL model was produced between 1971 and 1973. This vehicle was produced by BMW as a motorsport special so that it could compete in racing events. The L in the CSL name stood for light meaning that the car was speedier than previously released model versions. This light designation was achieved by using thinner steel to build the body of the vehicle. Initially the CSL model used the same 3.0-liter engine as the CS, however, the 3.0 CSL was given a very small increase in displacement to 3,003 cc by increasing the engine bore by one quarter of a millimeter in August of 1972 allowing the CSL to be raced in the “over three liter” racing category. This car had multiple add-ons that could be added by the buyer to increase value. The only thing before purchasing is to check to ensure that rust damage is not extensive and oil leaks are minimal.

1971 BMW 3.0 CSL

The 1971 BMW 3.0 CSL was the sportiest version of the CS series to be released. It was originally manufactured to be used as a motorsport vehicle in competitions. The light designation was symbolized in the CSL add-on. The lightness of the vehicle was achieved most easily by building the vehicle body with thinner steel and by removing the trim and soundproofing materials on the interior of the vehicle.

Also, they used aluminum alloy on the doors and other select parts of the vehicle to maintain the lightness. For this first model year produced, the car maintained the same engine used in the CS model version. The windows in this model were electric and the seats were fully adjustable. The particular buyer could add more add-ons.

In this 1972 model year, the engine type was changed from the CS versions engine and given a very small increase in displacement to 3,003 cc (183.3 cu in) by increasing the engine bore by one quarter of a millimeter. This was done in August 1972 to allow the CSL to compete in the over three-liter racing category. These cars have awesome suspension and disc braking capability. Also, electric windows were included standard.

1973 BMW 3.0 CSL

The 1973 BMW 3.0 CSL was the last model year to be produced by Bavarian Motor Works. As this was primarily built as a racing vehicle, it is a lot lighter than any of the other CS series vehicles. It is constructed with a thinner steel body frame and other parts of the car, such as door, hoods, and trunks were constructed of an aluminum alloy to maintain the lightness of the vehicle and make it the most dynamic in a race. In the 1973 model year of the 3.0 CSL, the engine was given another, more substantial increase in displacement to 3,153 cc by increasing the stroke to 84 mm. In this version, they also included an aerodynamic package including a large air dam, short fins running along the front fenders, a spoiler above and behind the trailing edge of the roof, and a tall rear wing. The rear wings were not installed at the factory, but were left in the boot for installation after purchase. With these additions, the cars were nicknamed Batmobiles.
