Ushering in the 1980s for Bayerische Motoren Werke was its 1980 BMW M1, the third iteration of what had been conceived of as a homologation partnership with Lamborghini. Though that partnership did not last, the 1980 BMW M1 did bear a body/form designed by the Italian Giorgetto Giugiaro. With its space age look and racecar appeal, the M1 saw an intersection of BMWs motor engineering, racing credibility, and commercial viability. In recent years, the Bavarian manufacturer had been blazing trails for itself in the Formula One field and in other racing circuits. The short-lived BMW M1 Procar Championship (1979-1980) saw the M1 Model raced by driving legends like Niki Lauda and Nelson Piquet. The 1980 BMW M1 was released at a time when BMW was becoming synonymous with racing prestige and ingenuity.
With its fuel-injected, straight-6, 3.5-liter motor, the 1980 BMW M1 zipped along the roadways at a top speed of 162 miles per hour. This sort of performance, power, and design work marked a major step forward for BMW, even if the M1 would only be produced in very small numbers. It is, in fact, among the rarest of BMWs in existence, with only 453 having been manufactured during its brief lifespan. Of those, 20 were produced specifically for the Procar racing series, bringing the total commercial fleet to a mere 433. This particular BMW model is reserved for the hardcore classic car aficionados, but even dedicated collectors need a professional assist now and again.
