Like previous model years, the 1988 BMW M6 was built with a modified version of the M88/3 engine, the same engine that powered the M1. This 3.5-liter inline six motor was able to put out 243 lb-ft of torque and 256 hp. European versions of the 1986 M6 were slightly stronger due to fewer restrictions. The M6 came with a five-speed manual transmission, an upgraded braking system from the M1, and attention-grabbing aluminum wheels.

The automobile was extremely popular with professional racers, and was able to win a number of different championships over the years. This boosted the M6s popularity and helped the car receive positive reviews from Car and Driver Magazine and Road and Track.
