Designed by Albrecht von Goertz, the 1956 BMW 507 was the first production model of one of the most desirable classic cars on the market. Memorable for its smooth yet aggressive lines, comfortable drive, and high-powered V8 engine, the 507 was fated to be a failed attempt to sell more luxury BMWs in America. While hailed as a major achievement in both design and aesthetics, the economic climate in Germany at the time pushed production costs through the roof, eventually forcing the final price of the car to be more than double than the projected cost- and BMW still lost money on each machine. As such, only 252 were manufactured, nearly driving BMW into bankruptcy. The 1956 model of the car, produced from 1956 to early 1957, is known as the Series I, and possessed a 29.1 gallon fuel tank placed behind the rear seats. The large size and placement of these tanks severely limited both seating room in the rear row, as well as the capacity of the cars trunk.
