Produced from 1963 to 1967, the Mercedes 230SL was the successor to the widely popular 300 and 190 SL lines. The 1964 Mercedes Benz 230SL, as well as other models years, boasted an inline six-cylinder engine with multi-port fuel injection using a mechanical pump system that was adapted from the diesel engines. The 1964 230SL was also rear-wheel drive, but was equipped with independent rear suspension – a feature that greatly improved road handling. There are a number of Buyer’s Tips depending on the body style that you choose. For example, the early SL’s were sold with both the removable hard top and a soft top in the so-called “Coupe/Roadster” configuration, but there was also the “California Coupe” version that came with the removable hardtop only. In these models, the soft top well is removed, and a drop-down bench seat was installed in its place. This rear seat is small and not very usefully, however, this “California Coupe” remains one of the most sought-after collectors cars in the Mercedes SL line.
Approximately 6,911 of the 1964 Mercedes Benz 230SL models rolled off the factory floor in Stuttgart. In fact, from July 1963 to January 1967 alone there were approximately 19,831 230SL’s produced. With that being said, one of the biggest Buyer’s Tips the classic auto specialists at The Beverly Hills Car Club can give you is to wait until you’ve found the Mercedes 230SL that suits your needs, as there is generally a large inventory of these cars available compared to other cars under the Mercedes-Benz brand. If you are trying to choose between the purchase of a 1963 and 1964 Mercedes Benz 230SL, you’ll be pleased to know that little was changed between these two years. In fact, the only outward changes on the US versions during this time frame included the wheel width increasing from 5.5 to 6 inches, and in November of 1964 the spare tire well was removed and the tire was mounted horizontally.
