As the final V8 model conceived and approved by Enzo Ferrari before his passing in 1988, commissioned to production posthumously, the 348 series holds a special place in Ferrari history. And the Spiders built by Ferrari have always been a perfect expression of their sporting heritage. It was this pedigree that inspired Pininfarina stylists as they set about designing the Spider to clothe the refined 348 series chassis for its 1993 debut.

An absolutely stunning symbol of its era and lineage, the Ferrari 348 (Type F119) is a mid-engined, V8-powered, two-seat sports car, in 1989 replacing the 328 and remaining in production until 1995.

Our car is equipped with gated 5-speed manual transmission, V8 engine, four-wheel disc brakes with Ferrari script, power steering, quad exhaust, Veglia instruments, black soft top, boot cover, retractable headlights, horizontal side strakes, Pininfarina badges, Carello fog lights, Bridgestone Potenza tires, and 18-inch alloy wheels with yellow Cavallino Rampante caps.

Convenience features include air conditioning, power windows, power-operated dual side mirrors, a pair of bucket seats, center console, 3-spoke steering wheel, and an Alpine radio with a 4-channel amplifier.

It represents the last of the analog-era Ferraris, built before modern traction and stability control systems became standard. Italian sports cars continue to rise in value, making this an excellent opportunity to acquire a 348 Spider that is well-equipped and mechanically sound.

The 348, badged 348 tb for the coupé (Trasversale Berlinetta) and 348 ts for the targa (Trasversale Spider), featured a naturally aspirated 3.4-liter version of the quad-cam, four-valve-per-cylinder V8 engine. As with its predecessors, the model number was derived from this configuration, with the first two digits being the displacement of the engine and the third being the number of cylinders.

The engine, which had a power output of 300 PS (221 kW; 296 hp), was mounted longitudinally and coupled to a transverse manual gearbox.

This marked the first street Ferrari application of the transverse gearbox design, originally developed for the Ferrari 312T F1 car. The ‘t’ in the model tb and ts designations refers to the transverse position of the gearbox, which Ferrari sought to highlight for the model range, celebrating this technical lineage. This was the also the first time, after the 288 GT, that Ferrari featured a mid-engined, longitudinal V8 in one of its standard road cars. Overall, 2,894 examples of the 348 TB and 4,228 of the 348 TS were produced.

1994 Ferrari 348 Spider interior

With straked side air intakes and rectangular tail-lights resembling the Testarossa, the 348’s styling differed from previous models. Such stylistic themes were reminiscent of the F40, the world’s fastest production car at the time, and other Ferrari models of the past. The model was also the final design overseen by chief Pinanfarina stylist Leonardo Fioravanti, known for such iconic designs as the F40, Daytona, 512 Berlinetta Boxer, 288 GTO, P5, P6 and others.

The 348 was a car that offered the same impressive performance as the Berlinetta, with a remarkably flex-free chassis, as well as the possibility of true top-down motoring. It had a top speed of 280 kph (173 mph); acceleration of 0-100 kph (0-62 mph) was a stunning 5.4 seconds.

The two-seater 348 Spider had a steel and aluminium body. The 348 Spider had a steel monocoque with differentiated tubular elements and a tubular rear subframe for the engine-suspension assembly.

The suspension was independent unequal-length wishbones front and rear. It had coil springs over gas-filled telescopic dampers, and stabilizer bars. The steering was rack and pinion. The car also had self-venting disc brakes with ATE anti-skid. The mid-rear 3405 cc 90degree V8 engine was mounted longitudinally and punched out 320 hp. It had twin overhead cams with four valves per cylinder and a Bosh M 2.7 control unit.

The Spider’s soft-top was canvas and beautifully integrated into the car’s line, thanks to in-depth wind tunnel testing. It folds into a compartment behind the seats using a system that didn’t impinge on either longitudinal occupant comfort or fuel tank capacity.

Given its sporty set-up, its interior and driver position were designed for maximum comfort. The seats and trim were a plush Connolly leather.

Come and check out the 1994 Ferrari 348 Spider we presently have at Beverly Hills Car Club: its beauty is a defining feature of the sumptuous last decade of the twentieth century.
