Car Tales: Final Edition, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT

With an acceleration of 0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds, and a top speed of 196 mph the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT Final Edition was, at the time of its 2013 reveal, the most powerful naturally-aspirated V8 powerplant fitted into a production car. And a fitting speed for such a stunningly beautiful vehicle, defined by its signature gullwing doors and its reference to the 300SL, first launched in 1954.

Unveiled in a twin premier at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show and Tokyo Motor Show, the SLS AMG GT Final Edition was commissioned by Mercedes-Benz to celebrate the model’s success. A limited-edition series with only 350 units total, the Final Edition production run consisted of 200 coupes and 150 roadsters. Fewer than 200 were imported into the United States.

The SLS AMG GT Final Edition was born out of Mercedes-AMG GmbH – commonly known as AMG, the high-performance subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz AG.

AMG independently hires engineers & manufacturers to customize AMG vehicles.

AMG models typically have more aggressive looks, higher performance, better handling, better stability and more carbon fibre than their regular Mercedes-Benz counterparts. AMG models are typically the most expensive and highest-performing variant of each Mercedes-Benz class. AMG has also made special variants of some Mitsubishi and Honda models.

The Mercedes-Benz Black Series was a consequence of AMG having wondered at how certain of its vehicles would behave if they were given extreme performance versions: essentially these would be track cars that became road legal, an ultra-exclusive, low-production VIP club. Only two-door coupes would be blessed with this special treatment of weight reduction, power increases, and chassis improvement. And there have only been six such options in the last two decades.

Aimed at a 2006 launch, the Black Series kicked off with the 2006-2007 SLK 55 Black Series: only 120 units were manufactured, none of which was sent to America.

But it was that 2013 Gullwing Black Series that truly got tongues wagging. The SLS Black Series swapped traditional build materials for carbon fiber, losing 150 pounds in the process. The M159 engine’s redline was raised from 7200 to 8000 rpm, and the titanium exhaust system created the soundtrack of a race car; it also had a shorter rear gear for enhanced acceleration.

At the SLS AMG GT’s heart is its 6.3-liter V-8 engine producing 583 horsepower at 6,800 rpm, with a maximum torque output of 479 pound-feet at 4,750 rpm sent through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic – managed through Mercedes-Benz’s AMG Speedshift DCT seven-speed transmission – for a terminal velocity of that governed 196 mph. The car’s performance received exclusive equipment which included a carbon fiber hood with central-air outlet, front splitter, the carbon fiber rear wing seen on the SLS AMG Black Series, and lightweight forged alloy wheels painted matte black.

We are lucky enough to have one of these motoring masterpieces right now at Beverly Hills Car Club: a spectacular 2015 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT Final Edition showing just 21,949 miles on the odometer, a striking blend of motorsport heritage and modern engineering.

Finished in its factory Iridium Silver Metallic over a Designo Black Exclusive leather interior, this example is elevated by a signature diamond-stitch pattern with contrasting silver stitching, delivering a cockpit that feels as special as the drive itself. As one of only 350 Final Edition models produced worldwide, this SLS marks the closing chapter of the iconic gullwing era from Mercedes-Benz and its high-performance division Mercedes-AMG.

This California car is powered by a hand-built 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 paired with an automatic transaxle, delivering a balanced driving experience. It is equipped with AMG-branded brake calipers finished in red, along with a carbon-fiber hood, rear wing, and optional engine covers. The signature gullwing doors remain a defining design feature, complemented by bi-xenon headlights and dual exhaust outlets. The car rides on AMG mixed-size wheels (19-inch front and 20-inch rear) wrapped in Continental tires.

Inside, the cabin is finished with a carbon-fiber interior package, including the center console, air vents, and door sills. Comfort and convenience include power-adjustable AMG sport seats, blind spot assist, keyless go, ac, cruise control, power everything, glove box, 3-spoke steering wheel, Bang & Olufsen sound system, and integrated navigation.

This example includes the manufacturer’s literature, such as an owner’s manual and maintenance booklet, along with $11,432.23 in service receipt copies from 2019 to 2024.

The SLS AMG was the first vehicle fully developed in-house by AMG, and its 6.2-liter V8 is considered one of the last great naturally aspirated engines of its era.

A limited-production SLS AMG GT Final Edition that is stunning and mechanically sound.
