Buying a 1954 Austin-Healey 100-4

1954 Austin-Healey 100-4The Healey Hundred as it is often called, was first displayed at the London Motor Show in October 1952. The brainchild of Donald Healey, the 1954 Austin-Healey 100-4 was designed to fill the void in the British sports car market found between the entry-level MG of the era and the luxurious and expensive Jaguar XK120 and XK140 models. On paper, the 100-4 appeared to be slow. However, with less weight in the nose, the 100-4 had the best balance of all the Big Healeys and the four-cylinder was actually faster than the six-cylinder that replaced it. These are just some of the reasons why collectors opt for the original Austin-Healey 100-4 rather than its newer siblings. While the 100-6 makes a great touring car, the 100-4 is a true sports car. Interestingly, designed by Gerry Coker, the 100-4 was named the 100 because it could reach the magic 100mph barrier.

1954 Austin-Healey 100-4 Buyers Guide

The California classic car dealership professionals at The Beverly Hills Car Club have put together the following Buyers Guide and Buyers Tips to assist you as you search for the perfect 1954 Austin-Healey 100-4. First, it should be mentioned that the 100-4s engine is an unstressed truck unit. It should easily give you 200,000 miles before any serious attention is needed. The 100-4 often leaks oil, but this can be reduced with a good tune up and proper maintenance. If youre looking at a model that has a rebuilt engine, ask if the crankshafts scroll-type rear main oil seal has been replaced with a more modern lipped version. This will save you a lot of heartache in the future. Lastly, almost 90 percent of the Big Healeys were built for export to America. Many have been restored with varying degrees of success. It is always best to have a third-party inspect the 1954 100-4 youre considering, whether it is in working condition or simply a body that needs to be checked for rust. As with all classics, if you can find one that has documentation regarding the history of ownership, maintenance and restoration, that is a plus.
