Buying A 1962 Mercedes Benz 220SE 111

1962 Mercedes Benz 220SE 111Introduced in the fall of 1959, the initial W111 sedan line from Mercedes Benz was a graceful and thoughtful evolution of the Ponton, which had been the first uni-body Mercedes production car. Considered large in Europe, the new W111 sedans were only a fraction larger than the current American compacts such as the Buick Special and the Chevrolet Corvair. As such, the 1962 Mercedes Benz 220SE 111 stretched 191.9-inches on a 108.3-inch wheelbase. The Mercedes 220SE also had many similar features to the Ponton models. For example, the 1962 Mercedes 220SE featured crumple zones and a rigid passenger structure – a safety innovation that had been introduced a few years earlier – as well as a uni-body construction, with a rubber-isolated sub frame. All models also had front disc brakes and the rear suspension was that of the 300SL convertible, which featured a low-pivot swing-axle arrangement.

1962 Mercedes Benz 220SE 111 Buyer’s Guide

Interestingly, the 1962 Mercedes Benz 220SE 111 and its other year models, while unmistakably a Mercedes brand auto, was very clearly Americanized. Many automotive publications and critics of the day noted the slightly wrapped front windshields and modest fintail features designed to pull in American buyers. In fact, the W111 220SE models would earn the nickname “Fintail.” While the factory never officially recognized this nickname, it would stick and remains associated with these cars today.
