Buying A Mercedes 220SE 111 Chassis

220SE 111 ChassisThe 220SE model designation lived on for a few more years after its initial 1958-1960 production, with the introduction of the 1961 Mercedes 220SE 111 Chassis. This luxurious model was the last of the hand-built Mercedes. The date of this release was carefully chosen. It was not the usual international auto show, this time it was the opening of the Daimler-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany on February 14th, 1961 – the celebration of the company’s 75th anniversary. First sketches of the new body shape appeared as early as 1957 and gave way to the name “fin-body,” as they were often referenced. These cars shared the chassis and wheelbase with the W111 sedan, as Benz needed to get away from the expensive production of small volume cars such as the 300S and the Ponton Coupes and Cabriolets, which shared very little with their Sedan counterparts.

Mercedes 220SE Cabriolet Buyer’s Tips

Like all open cars, the Mercedes 220SE Cabriolet had its own special appeal. Like the Ponton A Cabriolet models, the 220SE carried their tops in a recess just behind the rear seat, so only a small amount of fabric and folding mechanism protruded above the bodywork, to be covered by a tightly-fitting bag. Interestingly, the Cabriolet is not just an open Coupe, if you look closely you will see that the grille of the Mercedes W111 220SE Cabriolet is set at a different angle than the grille the Coupe; the grille of the Coupe stands more upright. If you are looking to buy Mercedes 220SE Cabriolet models, only 2,729 of the Mercedes 220SE 111 Chassis Cabriolet models were built from 1961 to 1965. This is a highly sought-after collectors car today.

Mercedes 220SE Coupe Buyer’s Tips

With a chassis code of 111.021, Benz produced 14,173 examples of the Mercedes 220SE Coupe from 1961 to 1965. Prices for the coupe were 32,500 NLG when it began production. Options included a sliding sunroof, automatic transmission, power steering, and individual rear seats in place of the bench seat. This option is extremely rare.
