Buying a 1971 Jaguar XKE Convertible

1971 Jaguar XKE ConvertibleThe 1971 Jaguar XKE Convertible, as well as the Fixed Head Coupe 2+2, would mark the beginning of the Series III Jaguar XKE. The traditional Fixed Head Coupe on the short wheelbase would no longer be offered; both the Convertible and the Fixed Head Coupe would now be built on the 2+2 chassis. This move was made not only to cut production costs, but was necessary to accommodate the longer V12 engine. An automatic transmission was also available on the Convertible for the first time in 1971. Visually, flared wheel arches, wider tires and a cross-slatted front grille would identify the 1971 Jaguar XKE models from their predecessors. Bigger, vented brakes were added, and power steering would become a standard feature. If you’re thinking about buying a 1971 Jaguar XKE Convertible, watch for models that feature additional features such as automatic transmission, leather interior and air conditioning.

1971 Jaguar XKE Convertible Buyer’s Guide

The classic Jaguar XKE is renowned for offering exceptional performance, style and grace unlike any other. While the Series I Convertible models are perhaps the most valuable of the line, the Series II and Series II Convertibles come very close to the values of the Series I. As you may assume, condition plays a vital role in the overall value of any classic Jaguar XKE. For this reason, you’ll want to ensure that you have a thorough understanding of the car’s overall condition- whether you’re purchasing for restoration or are looking for a frame-up concours-quality restoration for your private collection. The Beverly Hills Car Club always advises having a third party inspection performed on any potential purchase. As with all classic cars, you’ll also want to authenticate any Jaguar you are seriously considering. To do this, be sure engine and chassis numbers match Jaguar records. You can also ask sellers for any documentation they have on ownership history and/or maintenance and repair, which can offer you a glimpse into the car’s past. These are just a few of the Buyer’s Tips for the 1971 Jaguar XKE Convertible and other XKE models.
