H.J. Mulliner and Co. was a family business founded in 1897. The controlling interest of H.J. Mulliner and Co. passed to John Croall & Sons, who then sold the interest to Rolls Royce in 1959. Mulliner is now the personal commissioning department for Bentley. Under John Croall & Sons, bodies were fitted to various chassis but by the 1930s, the entire output went to Rolls Royce and Bentley. When Rolls Royce acquired Mulliner, they merged it with Park Ward to become Mulliner Park Ward in 1961. Mulliner was one of the last independent coachbuilders not to be controlled by motor manufacturer or distributors. H.J. Mulliner and Co. would receive the vehicles as chassis cum engine with no coachwork, no interior and often no tires. The coachbuilder would then design the model according to the taste of the client. As a result, each model was very unique, with some made in only one or a few examples.
