About J Gurney Nutting and Co.
J Gurney Nutting and Co. was an English company names after John Gurney Nutting and founded in 1918. The first designs by J Gurney Nutting and Co. were presented at the London Motor Show in October 1920. In 1921, J Gurney Nutting and Co. introduced their all-weather body with a roof that folded in the usual way and side windows lowering into the doors. A fire destroyed the company’s premises in Croydon, in 1923 and the business moved to Chelsea on Elystan Street. In 1924, J Gurney Nutting and Co. purchased a license to employ the Weymann technique that provided silence and lightness to the cars. That same year, A F McNeil joined the firm as chief designer and created some of the most successful models made by J Gurney Nutting and Co. All coachbuilder work was suspended during World War II and in 1945, the business became part of the Jack Barclay group, which had acquired James Young Limited previously.
