A Ferrari 365 BB (or Berlinetta Boxer) is part of a series of cars made by Ferrari in Italy between 1973 and 1984. The Ferrari 365 BB cars were equipped with a mid-mounted flat-12 engine, which replaced the FR layout engine of the Ferrari Daytona. The first of this series was the Ferrari 365 GT4 BB, followed by the BB 512, then the BB512i and the series was ended with the BB LM when the Ferrari Testarossa took over. Leonardo Fioravanti designed the Ferrari BB with very sharp angles and an aggressive look, as was popular for many of the top sports cars of the era. The BB was a major step in Ferraris engineering. Enzo Ferrari was reluctant on building mid-engined road cars, thinking it would be too difficult to handle for his clientele. When Ferrari lost its racing dominance in the late 1950s to competitors using mid-engine layouts, the company decided to make the change. The 4-, 6-, and 8-cylinder Dino racing cars were the first ones to use this layout, which was later adapted on the Dino road version.
For the Ferrari 365 BB, the flat-12 engine was mounted longitudinally rather than transversally, and used timing belts instead of chains like its predecessor. Delivering a satisfying 380hp, the power was transmitted to the wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox. The Ferrari 365 GT4 BB was first shown at the Turin Motor Show in 1971 and released for sale at the Paris Motor Show two years later. The car was designed to compete with the Lamborghini Miura and recently developed Countach. Only 387 cars were made, 88 of which with right-hand drive. Today, this classic is highly coveted by Ferrari collectors and classic car enthusiasts alike.
Ferrari 365 BB cars were never sold in North America directly, as Enzo Ferrari didnt think it would be worth the cost of federalizing. Third parties made the conversions however, and a few cars were shipped in the US. If youre dreaming of driving a Ferrari 365 BB, call The Beverly Hills Car Club today.
