‘The last of the really coach-built Mercedes,’ said the supreme Jay Leno, a super-collector of classic cars, of the Mercedes 280SE.
On his YouTube channel the great television host has been known to extoll the virtues of the model, proclaiming the 280SE to be comparable with a Rolls-Royce in its luxury, but much cheaper, with a timeless style that still looks ‘reasonably contemporary.’
Beverly Hills Car Club Classic Cars Dealership – we buy nationwide and sell nationally & internationally
What is it that Jay Leno loves so much about the Mercedes-Benz 280SE? Above, that is, a car with a top speed of 120 mph, making the 280SE an ideal autobahn cruiser, and with such timelessly elegant styling? ‘It’s just very solid,’ he says, comparing the car to a handbuilt watch. ‘A fantastic car to drive, with that high roof inside. When you put your foot on it, it kicks down. And I Iike the stack headlights: it looks more substantial to me.’ In fact, Jay Leno loves the interiors of the Mercedes-Benz 280SE: ‘The texture of the leather has a rich aroma. It smells better, this rich leather: you can use hide food on it. There’s plenty of leg room. The glove-box is a solid piece of wood, beautiful wood that you can use furniture polish on.’
Most people who call us about a W111 open the conversation the same way: with an apology. The chrome is pitted. It hasn’t run since the nineties. There’s a spot in the rocker they’ve never wanted to look at closely. The restoration was started and never finished, and the parts are in labeled boxes in the corner of the garage.
None of that is news to us, and none of it ends the conversation. We have been buying classic Mercedes-Benz for decades, and purchase nationwide across the 48 continental states and Hawaii. In that time we have handled W111 two-doors in every state a fifty-year-old hand-built Mercedes can be in — sorted and documented, half-apart, sitting on flat tires behind a storage facility with a lien attached, or tied up in an estate that nobody in the family knows what to do with.
What we do is straightforward. We look at your car honestly, we tell you what it’s worth to us, and if an offer is made and agreed to, we pay immediately and the number doesn’t change afterward.
This matters more on a W111 than on almost anything else we buy, because the badge covers cars with very different values.
The 280SE two-doors were built for the 1968 through 1971 model years, in two body styles and with two engines. The six-cylinder cars use the M130, 2,778cc, single overhead cam, Bosch mechanical injection with the six-plunger pump: and carry chassis prefixes in the 111.024 (coupe) and 111.025 (cabriolet) range. From late 1969, the 280SE 3.5 arrived with the M116 alloy V8 and Bosch D-Jetronic electronic injection, wearing the lowered radiator shell that collectors call the flachkühler, under prefixes 111.026 and 111.027.
Body style is the largest single factor. Cabriolets trade well above comparable coupes, and that gap has widened over the last decade. Engine is second: the 3.5 commands a firm premium over the 2.8 in both body styles. Then originality -an unmolested car in a correct factory color combination with its original engine sits in a different tier than a repainted, re-trimmed, or re-engined example, however nice it looks in photographs. Options carry real weight here too: a four-speed manual is genuinely scarce on U.S. cars and desirable, as are European headlamps, a correct Becker unit, working factory air, and a sunroof on a coupe.
Major auction. Real exposure to the right audience, and for a documented cabriolet in strong condition it can be an excellent outcome. The costs are also real: a seller’s commission generally around ten percent, transport in and potentially back out, insurance and storage during consignment, and a timeline usually measured in months rather than weeks. If the car doesn’t meet reserve, you’ve spent the time and the money without a sale.
Online enthusiast auctions. Lower cost of entry, faster, and a knowledgeable crowd. They also reward preparation — a strong photo set, a detailed description, and an owner available to answer questions publicly for a week. Cars that present ambiguously tend to underperform there, and W111s with unresolved rust questions present ambiguously.
Private sale. You keep everything you’re paid, and you spend time instead of fees. The buyer pool for a car at this level is genuine but thin and patient. Expect inquiries that go nowhere, inspection requests, offers contingent on financing, and negotiations that stall over exactly the sills, top well, and chrome we described above.
Selling to us! You trade the theoretical top of the market for a certain outcome. We respond within 24 to 48 hours, frequently the same day. If an offer is made and agreed to, it’s a specific number — not a range, not subject to an inspection later — and payment goes out immediately. Top dollar paid and immediate transactions, with no commission, no listing fees, and nothing deducted at the end.
Photos first: the whole car from all four corners in decent daylight, the interior, the engine bay, the trunk with the mat up, and close-ups of the rockers, door bottoms, floors, rear quarters, and — on a cabriolet — the top well. Clear phone photos are fine. Honest ones are better than flattering ones.
Then the chassis number, and the story: how long you’ve owned it, where it’s been kept, what’s been done and when, what you know is wrong, and whether you have a data card, service records, or restoration receipts.
You’ll typically hear back from us within 24 to 48 hours and often faster. If we’re making an offer, it’s firm. If we’re not the right buyer for your car, we’ll say why. No pressure and no urgency tactics. When you’re ready to move forward, we’re easy to reach.

“JD was amazing!”

“Dealing with Alex and his entire team was a real pleasure. I am still very busy at my business and his team helped me through the complete process. And more importantly, they were patient and understanding when I was busy. It was a real positive experience (although I miss my 250 SL a little)”

“This is the 3rd classic Mercedes that Valarie Van Dam has helped with with. Valarie is a true professional. I would recommend her to anyone considering selling a classic car through Alex Manos and the Beverly Hills Car Club. Everything went as planned and no hassles. Made the sale on Saturday and on Monday the funds were wired to my bank then when the funds cleared the bank the transport arrived 2 days later. You don’t have to worry about someone trying to steal your classic or rip you off. Very safe transaction and I would recommend using Valarie to ensure a safe and trouble-free transaction to anyone selling a car. Thank you to the Alex Manos team, job well done!”

“Gevik was very professional and answered all our questions quickly. He was helpful and also friendly.”

“As a Sr. Citizen looking to sell my cherished vehicle I had much anxiety. Once the initial contact was made from this company I knew I was in good, honest hands. Their customer service skills, patience with any technical requests were comforting. I could see I was working with a team who knew what they were doing. Each of them were knowledgeable and informed. Everything they said would happen during the transaction happened. When their driver arrived to complete the deal I was glad I chose this company to do business with.I am beyond pleased.”

“My experience with the Alex Manos staff was a dream come true after the nightmare of my husband’s sudden death. He had a 1979 280SL Euro model sedan that was cosmetically lovely but mechanically ‘frozen’. After scouring my local mechanics for help, I realized no one here had the resources, personnel or interest to take it on. I was told the only option was to sell it to a junk yard, where it would surely lay rusting into the mud as parts would not be available, and fixing it would be twice the cost of what it was worth. I contacted the Alex Manos company, and after an uplifting phone call with Valerie, we agreed on a sale. Immediately after, they coordinated transportation, Title transfer & bill of sale processes, and within a week it was on its way to CA. With great relief, I was assured the car wouldn’t be sold for scrap or parted out, that it would be detailed and fixed and sold…which felt like the best possible outcome for a weary widow liquidating assets toward closure of the estate. As I said in my letter to them, they are famous for ‘spinning straw into gold’ (as their many website photos prove) They are the one company with the resources, the personnel and the *heart* to restore treasured-yet-challenging vehicles, and I & my family recommend them without reservation and with grateful hearts.”

“In buying my car Alex and I faced a lot of hard work. The car had been in storage for 30 years, but a nice photo of it alerted him to its potential. The original title had been lost and this required many interactions with the California DMV to buy a replacement, with the receipt functioning to permit Alex to move forward with the purchase. Alex guided me expertly through all the necessary steps. And finally, when the time came for moving the car from the Sacramento area to LA, he had engaged a towing company which worked closely with me and the storage place to schedule the arrival of their truck–necessary because I live some distance from the storage place myself. It all went pretty smoothly, thanks to Alex’s expert and professional help.”

“Number one!”
