Buying or Selling a 1964 BMW 1600

1964 BMW 1600The 1964 BMW 1600, part of the Neue Klasse, or New Class, series of BMW vehicles, was an updated version of the successful 1500, as well as its replacement. It derives its name from the 1600cc four-cylinder engine that drove the rear wheels in this mid-size luxury sedan. It was visually identical to the 1500 model that it replaced, featuring great visibility, thin columns, a tall greenhouse, and a commendably large trunk. Performance-wise, the engine was a highly praised improvement over the 1500s with improvements in output and fuel economy! The 1600 was regarded as quite sporty, and while it didnt have a very long production run, its direct successor- the 1602 or 1600-2 – did, lasting until 1975.

1964 BMW 1600 Buyers Guide

With nearly 10,000 units produced during its production run of a little over two years, it is currently unknown how many 1600s remain intact, which makes off-the-cuff valuation of the car somewhat difficult. As always, the general rules of classic car buying remain the same: get it inspected, professionally, by both a mechanic and an inspector, if at all possible. If its for whatever reason unfeasible to pay a professional to ensure the value of the vehicle and that the claims of the current owner are true, then the recommended strategy is to do as much research as humanly possible, and to thoroughly inspect it for yourself. Keep an eye out for any indicators of rust and corrosion, such as paint rippling or bubbling, which could indicate a wider, underlying rust issue. Also try to take into account the originality of the machine. A 1964 BMW 1600 with a non-manufacturer engine, full of replacement parts, or covered in modern repairs is not going to be worth near as much as a numbers-matching example in pristine condition, or a quality restoration.
