The BMW 503 was the next model to be released by Bavarian Motors Works after the BMW 501 and BMW 502. There were only 413 of these BMW 503 vehicles produced from 1956 to 1959. The designer of these vehicles was known as Albrecht von Goertz. The BMW 503 was developed alongside the BMW 507 roadster vehicle. Because of its prestigious price tag, the BMW Company actually took a loss in the production and sale of these luxurious and beautiful vehicles. BMW produced the BMW 503 because it needed a sports car of its own to compete with other sports cars being produced at the time by companies like Mercedes-Benz and Bentley. The BMW 503 was designed as a 2+2 grand tourer class vehicle that was available in either a coupe body style or a cabriolet body style. It was said to have a more modern and cleaner design than the curvaceous and flared BMW 501 and 502 models. It was the first European vehicle to have an electrically operated top in the cabriolet version.
