First presented at the Detroit Auto Show, the Rolls Royce Corniche IV was one of the last before the Rolls Royce Marque was sold to Volkswagen in 1998. The fourth Corniche was also one of the last cars to see work by the storied Mulliner Park Ward before its shutdown in 1991. Featuring a new adaptive suspension, a four-speed GM4L80 automatic transmission rather than the former three-speed, and a glass window instead of a plastic on the saloons it would serve as the final Corniche for the 20th Century. CFC-free air conditioning supplemented the spacious, luxury design philosophy that emphasized rider comfort and new airbags for the passenger and driver emphasized rider safety.
Late in its production the Corniche IVs performance would see some attention with an upgraded L40IT V8 engine offering an over twenty percent increase in power. The last 25 models dubbed the Corniche S were all supercharged for maximum output and are particularly fun to drive. All-in-all the Corniche IV was the last of its kind, marking the divide between the Vickers era and the modern Volkswagen/BMW era.
Looking to purchase a classic Rolls Royce?
For the Rolls Royce Corniche IV, there are some special variants the value-conscious will want to look out for, namely the 1992 anniversary edition and the Corniche S. Both are immensely rare with exactly 25 produced each, but luckily have some distinguishing marks we can recognize them by. The anniversary edition (made for the 21st anniversary of the Corniche line) is hard to miss with its cream-colored hood and Ming Blue finish, along with the silver plaque fixed on the dash. The Corniche S is subtler with no distinguishing aesthetic elements, but can be recognized by the R badges and a sign on the dashboard identifying it as one Corniche S out of 25.
