Buying or Selling a Rolls Royce Phantom II

Rolls Royce Phantom IIIn 1929, the Rolls Royce Phantom II came hot onto the scene sporting several upgrades over the New Phantom or Phantom I as it was called to keep the succession clear. With an entirely new Chassis and a polished fit and finish that outdistanced even the sterling promise of quality Rolls Royce Limited had established in minds the world over, the Phantom II was a daring innovation brought forth as the world economy was teetering on collapse. A refined version of the Phantom Is 7.7 liter engine with a supplementary crossflow cylinder head brought the Phantom IIs performance up to another level.

And if the standard Phantom II wasnt enough, you could opt for the Continental Model or Phantom II Continental Saloon based off of a design Henry Royce himself had custom ordered with a specially tuned engine and a lacquered pearl finish. This model, dubbed the 26EX, would win the 1930 Grand Prix dHonneur in Biarritz, France convincing the management at Rolls Royce Limited to market the Continental as a more adventurous alternative to the Standard Phantom II.

Rolls Royce Phantom II Buyers Guide

Perhaps youve spied a Phantom II and are dying to get your hands on itfirst off youll want to confirm that its in good condition and how much of its makeup is original rather than a recent and possibly shoddy replacement. Second youll want to make sure that it is in fact a Phantom II rather than a Phantom I; you can do this by checking the VIN and finding out if the date codes fall between 1929 and 1936. Thirdly youll want to verify beyond a shadow of a doubt whether youre looking at the Phantom II or the Continental. The Continental will have a shorter wheelbase and more rigid five-leaf springs with its spare wheels likely being mounted in the back rather than the front fender wells. Youll want to snatch up a Continental in any passable condition as it is both a more robust machine than the conventional Phantom II and monumentally rare.
