Selling a Porsche 996?

Who Buys Early 2000's 911?

If you have owned a 996 for any length of time, you have heard all of it. The headlight jokes. The IMS bearing threads that run four hundred replies deep. The person at cars and coffee who wanted you to know his 993 was air-cooled. Two decades of that has left a lot of 996 owners with a distorted sense of what their car is actually worth. The market moved while the commentary stayed put. Clean, documented, manual-gearbox examples are no longer the cheap way into a 911, wide-body Carrera 4S coupes have developed a following of their own, and the Mezger-engined Turbo, GT2 and GT3 cars were never discounted in the first place.

Beverly Hills Car Club Classic Cars Dealership – we buy nationwide and sell nationally & internationally

Our team buys 996s directly. We look at the car, we make one number, and if an offer is made and agreed to, payment is immediate and we handle the paperwork and logistics from there. No consignment window, no reserve drama, no three months of answering the same six questions from people who are never going to buy anything.

Working With Beverly Hills Car Club

Alex Manos began buying collector cars in Los Angeles in 2004. What started with British sports cars grew, largely through sellers telling other sellers that the process was straightforward, into a business that now purchases nationwide across the continental United States and Hawaii.

Our team has bought across thousands of makes, models, and condition levels, and — more relevant to you — across every complication a sale can carry. Estates where the executor has never seen a Porsche invoice. Divorces where both parties need a neutral valuation and a clean split. Storage facilities holding a lien and a car that has not moved since the second Bush administration. Titles in the wrong state, titles in a deceased owner’s name, registrations that lapsed a decade ago.

What 996 Are You Selling?

This matters more than sellers expect, because the spread across the generation is enormous.

The 3.4-liter cars (1999-2001). Carrera and Carrera 4, coupe and cabriolet, 296 horsepower. These are the earliest and most affordable examples, and they are also where condition and documentation swing value hardest. A tired 3.4 Tiptronic cabriolet and a sorted 3.4 coupe with a manual and a full file are not remotely the same transaction.

The facelift cars (2002-2005). The 3.6-liter engine, 320 horsepower, the teardrop headlamps that ended the Boxster comparison, and a materially better interior. The Targa arrived with its sliding glass roof. So did the Carrera 4S — Turbo bodywork, Turbo track width, Turbo brakes, naturally aspirated engine — which has become one of the most sought configurations of the whole run.

The Mezger cars. Turbo, Turbo S, GT2, GT3. Different engine architecture entirely, dry-sumped and derived from Porsche’s racing programs, and not subject to the intermediate shaft question that dominates Carrera discussions. These have always been valued separately and always will be.

The 40 Jahre. The 2004 anniversary car in GT Silver with the X51 power kit and a limited production run. If you own one, you own the most collectible naturally aspirated Carrera of the generation.

The IMS Question, Answered Straight

You knew this was coming. Every 996 Carrera conversation gets here eventually. The intermediate shaft bearing in the M96 engine can fail, and when it does the consequences are severe. Earlier cars generally used a more robust dual-row bearing, with a single-row unit appearing in later production. The actual failure rate has been argued over for twenty years and credible people still disagree about it.

Here is what matters for your sale. If the retrofit has been done, typically alongside the rear main seal and clutch, because the transmission has to come out either way — say so, produce the invoice, and you have removed the single largest objection any informed buyer will raise. If it has not been done, that is not a problem for us. It is a known variable that gets priced in, the same way we price in a clutch at the end of its life or a service interval coming due.

The same logic applies to bore scoring and oil consumption concerns on cars that show them, to a car that smokes, and to a car that has not run in three years. We do not need your 996 to be perfect. We need to understand it accurately.

Modifications we take case by case. Reversible work with the factory parts retained rarely costs much. Permanent changes — 997 headlamp conversions, cut bodywork, an engine swap, a hard-mounted cage — narrow the audience, and the number reflects the narrower audience rather than a penalty for having enjoyed the car.

Us Versus the Alternatives

Traditional collector auction. The right venue for a low-mileage 40 Jahre, a documented GT3, a Turbo S. Real exposure, real competition, and real costs: a seller’s premium usually around ten percent off your hammer price, transport in both directions if it does not sell, insurance, and a timeline in months. Miss reserve and you have spent money to end up exactly where you started, with a car that now has a public no-sale attached to it.

Online enthusiast auctions. Genuinely well suited to this generation, and we will not pretend otherwise. The audience knows 996s, the diligence in the comments is real, and an exceptionally documented car photographed well can beat expectations. What it costs you is labor and exposure — you write the listing, you photograph the underside, you answer every question in public for a week, and you accept that a quiet bidding day becomes a permanent, searchable part of your car’s history.

Private sale. The highest number on paper and the most work by a distance. Expect a large volume of inquiries, a small fraction who are serious, no-shows, pre-purchase inspections used as negotiating leverage, offers arriving well under asking, and financing that falls through late. Some sellers enjoy this. Most tell us afterward they would not do it again.

Selling to us. You send photographs and the VIN. We respond within 24 to 48 hours, often the same day. If an offer is made and agreed to, you receive a specific number — not a range, not subject to inspection, not contingent on anything — with immediate payment and logistics handled on your schedule. Top dollar paid and immediate transactions, with no fees deducted from your side and nothing to reconcile afterward.

What to Send

Photographs first: the exterior from all four corners in daylight, the interior including seat bolsters and the dashboard, the engine bay, the front trunk with the carpet lifted, the radiator ducts, the wheels, and anything you would want to see if you were the one buying. Phone photographs are fine. Clear beats professional.

Then the VIN, and whatever context you are comfortable sharing — how long you have owned it, where it has lived, what has been done to it, what you know is coming due, and whether there is anything unusual about the title or the situation.

We know that selling one of these is rarely a purely financial decision. Plenty of 996 owners bought the car as the 911 they had wanted since childhood and drove it that way for fifteen years. If it is going somewhere it will be appreciated matters to you, tell us

“I could never have imagined this experience going as smoothly as it did. Thank you so much Alex and Celina and thank you for your patience with my busy work schedule while I was trying to get everything done. I had another person I met when I was considering having Alex buy my car, and he had also had a car in the past that he sold to Alex, and he recommended Alex 100%- that made my mind feel even more at ease. It can be easy for people, especially women, to get taken advantage of in the car market, and I did not feel that way at all…thanks again:) wish I had more cars to sell you…hahahaha”
