Buying a 1958 Mercedes Benz 300SL Roadster

1958 Mercedes Benz 300SL RoadsterLeave it to Mercedes Benz to be anything other than ordinary. Unlike most car brands where the road cars generally precede the racing version, the Mercedes Benz 300SL was directly derived from the German automaker’s widely popular sports racing car that had won the 24-Hours of LeMans in 1952. First debuted as the 300SL Gullwing Coupe in 1954, the road car retained much of the racing versions strong tubular frame and offered fully independent suspension and a fuel-injected version of Mercedes’ 2,995cc single-overhead camshaft engine. The Coupe would be replaced in 1957 by the popular Roadster model with much anticipation. Today, the 1958 Mercedes Benz 300SL Roadster (and other model years) is one of the most desired European sports-luxury classics in the marketplace. Only 1,858 units of the 300SL Roadster would be manufactured from 1957 to 1963, with 324 of those being produced in 1958.
