Buying a 1958 Porsche 356A Coupe

1958 Porsche 356 A CoupeFrom 1950 until the Porsche 356 was discontinued in 1965, more than 76,000 models would roll off the production line in Stuttgart, Germany. During this time, it is estimated that more than fifty percent of the Porsche 356 models were exported to the United States. Many of these cars survived, so today’s classic car collectors and enthusiasts will find good availability on models with higher production numbers. Throughout the fifteen-year production, several distinct models would be released. First would be the Pre-A, manufactured from 1950 to 1955, the 356A would follow from 1955 to 1959. The 1958 Porsche 356A Coupe and Cabriolet models signify a change in the 356A line to the T-2 body style. This change would bring about a new door-latch mechanism and a striker plate that was moved down to the center of the doorjamb, where it would stay for the remainder of production. Inside the car, the door handle moved from the center of the door to the top edge and the heater control traded places with the shifter. Seats were also changed, from the overstuffed chairs of earlier years to the slimmer, more attractive seats that would be used for the rest of the production run. Coupe models, identified by their fixed steel top, would see approximately 3,369 units roll off the production floor during this production year.
