Buying a 1966 Jaguar XKE Convertible

1966 Jaguar XKE ConvertibleThe 1966 Jaguar XKE Convertible would run alongside a Fixed Head Coupe model and, for the first time in the spring of 1966, a Fixed Head Coupe 2+2 edition on a longer chassis. Part of the original Series I that would run from 1961 to 1967, the 1966 Jaguar XKE featured a 4.2L six-cylinder engine with twin polished aluminum valve covers. This 4.2L engine, unlike the previous 3.8L engine, would feature a four-speed all synchromesh transmission. The 2+2 edition would often come with a three-speed automatic transmission. Three SU carburetors and rack and pinion steering would complete the package. If you’re thinking about buying a Convertible XKE, if you can find an example that has the original hard top option, this is an added perk and can increase the value of your classic. Inside the Series I XKE Convertible, the aluminum center panel that was previously found on the 3.8L would be changed to a black textured finish. These are just a few of the characteristics that you can expect to find when exploring authentic 1966 Jaguar XKE Convertible models.

1966 Jaguar XKE Convertible Buyer’s Guide

While the Jaguar XKE is one of the most recognizable and desired classic cars in the market, it is not as out of reach as it may seem. The classic Jaguar XKE is certainly more expensive than other British cars such as the MG or Triumph, there is a wide selection of XKE models available, thus allowing buyers or all types and budgets to own an XKE. The exact value, of course, will vary from year to year and depends greatly on the car’s condition, history, authenticity, originality, location and availability. The 1966 Jaguar XKE Convertible, like most XKE Convertibles, will typically command a greater price tag than its Fixed Head Coupe counterpart, while the 2+2 models with the higher roofline are typically the least expensive. Similarly, the models from 1969 to 1971, which suffer from restricted performance thanks to U.S. regulations on safety and emissions at the time, are generally less sought-after. However, this is all personal preference. The Beverly Hills Car Club always recommends that you perform a third party inspection on any potential purchase to ensure you are keenly aware of the overall condition of any classic you are considering purchasing.
