Considered one of the most beautiful cars ever made, the Jaguar XKE paired exceptional styling with high performance and grace. First introduced at the Geneva Motor Show on March 15, 1961, the Jaguar XKE would see more than a decade of production and three distinct series. The 1972 Jaguar XKE Convertible is part of Series III, which would be the final series of the lineup and the one to introduce the new V12 engine. During Series III, Jaguar would also stop production on the shorter wheelbase Fixed Head Coupe and would move production of both the Convertible and Fixed Head Coupe 2+2 to the longer wheelbase. The Convertible XKE models also received the optional addition of an automatic transmission. It is estimated that approximately 1,676 Convertible Jaguar XKE modes were manufactured during this year, while only 2,291 2+2 Coupes would see production.
The most damaging problem on any classic Jaguar XKE is rust. As such, rust free is not a phrase that should be taken lightly. Because of the 1972 Jaguar XKE Convertible’s partially unitized construction, which means the body tub also provides most of the structural strength for the car, it is important to remember that each panel functions for both support and appearance. If you’re buying a classic XKE, always be sure to inspect for rust. Some of the most common areas of concern include under the rear fenders, under the spare tire, along the doorsills, and under the carpets. While some rust should not completely deter you from purchasing a XKE model, you’ll want to take rust repair and restoration into consideration as it pertains to your budget. These are just a few of the Buyer’s Tips for the 1972 Jaguar XKE Convertible that The Beverly Hills Car Club has learned over their years of experience in the classic car market.
