Produced from 1955 to 1959, the Bentley S1 was the last production car to be made with an independent chassis. Bentley and Rolls Royce were no longer dependent on individual coachbuilders and the body of the Bentley S1 was well received by the public, featuring a modified razor edge design. Different wheelbases and special body styles were also made. The engine was a 4.9-liter unit with six-cylinders, linked to a four-speed transmission. A standard-wheelbase model set the top speed at 103 mph in 1957 and 0-to-60 mph were reached in about 13 seconds. Power steering and air-conditioning were available from 1956. Six months after the introduction of the S1, a Continental version was launched. The Bentley S2 was the successor, fitted with a new V8 engine.
