The 1960s was a halcyon but exciting decade for BMW, the Bavarian automobile manufacturer who had clawed its way back to commercial relevance and engineering excellence with a sensible approach to satisfying customer demand. What had unfolded between 1961 (year of the New Class debut) and 1964 was a progression of engine power, body design, and overall performance as the 1500 gave way to both its 1600 successor and the 1800 which outsold them both. Then, in 1965, came the BMW 2000 Sedan, a New Class model intended to pair the practical and performance aspects of the 1800 with an elegance befitting a luxury car. BMW adhered closely to its engineering tenets, but sought to import its New Class fundamentals into a higher end market. A reputation for both performance and class that has characterized BMW for decades was perhaps born, or at least affirmed, in 1965 with the BMW 2000 Sedan.
Throughout the 1960s, the M10 engine was central to BMWs New Class series of car models. In the case of the BMW 2000 Sedan, the M05 variant of the M10 was at work. This engine featured 1990 cc/121 in3 dimensions which produced 75 kW or just over 100 horsepower. In short, the 2000 Sedan was, in relation to the 1800 against which it was compared, an all-around upgrade. A stronger engine, a greater deal of trim, and headlights bearing an immediately recognizable rectangular shapethese features alone were often enough to prompt a test-drive or fuel trans-Atlantic interest. And that interest has persisted into the present for those who cherish the memory of BMWs decade of restoration.
