Car Tales: Eternal Summer, Ferrari 360 F1 Spider

An ancient town in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy, Modena was not only the birthplace of Enzo Ferrari, but also of operatic tenor Luciano Pavarotti and chef Massimo Bottura, the Italian restaurateur and the patron of Osteria Francescana, a three-Michelin-star Modena restaurant which has been listed in the top 5 at The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards since 2010.

Modena, you might accurately surmise, is the ideal city of civilisation: its admirable architectural treasures are a Unesco World Heritage Site, its hospitality focuses on cuisine and cultural life, all with a fascinating and characteristic blend of innovation and tradition.

But the fact that Modena includes the Parco Enzo Ferrari is a guide to the true contemporary essence of the city.

Enriching the city landscape is the spectacular MEF-Enzo Ferrari Museum – opened in March 2012. This recently restored structure commemorates Enzo Ferrari in the house where he was born, with an exhibition which tells the most important events of his extraordinary life, with the support of modern multimedia.

There is also an art gallery, which is currently hosting temporary exhibitions about Ferrari’s career and cars, and the main stars and competitions of this Modena brand of race cars.

It is quite some cultural heritage, one overseen by the eternal spirit of Enzo Ferrari since he went to that great car-park in the sky in 1988: the founder of Scuderia Ferrari in Grand Prix motor racing, and subsequently of the Ferrari automobile marque. Under his leadership in Formula One, Ferrari won nine World Drivers’ Championships and eight World Constructors’ Championships during his lifetime.

Of course one of the best secrets about Enzo Ferrari was the truth about his car company: that he only started it to provide funding for his Formula One ambitions.

11 years after the death of the Ferrari Patriarch, the Ferrari 360 Spider was unveiled at the 2000 Geneva Motor Show.

The 360 was always designed with a convertible variant in mind; since removing the roof of a coupe reduces the torsional rigidity, the 360 was built for strength in other areas.

Ferrari designers strengthened the sills, stiffened the front of the floorpan and redesigned the windscreen frame. The rear bulkhead had to be stiffened to cut out engine noise from the cabin.

The convertible’s necessary dynamic rigidity is provided by additional side reinforcements and a cross brace in front of the engine.

Passenger safety is ensured by a strengthened windscreen frame and roll bars. The 360 Spider displays a curvilinear waistline. The fairings imply the start of a roof, and stable roll bars are embedded in these elevations.

Due to use of light aluminium construction throughout, the Spider weighs in only 60 kg (130 lb) heavier than the coupé.

And at Beverly Hills Car Club right now we have a spectacular example of this model, a 2001 Ferrari 360 F1 Spider featured with 65,662 miles on the odometer. Finished in Grigio Nuvolari, the exterior pairs beautifully with a beige leather interior highlighted by subtle dark blue piping, perfectly complementing the matching blue convertible soft top.

This Pininfarina-designed Ferrari combines style and performance with a 3.6-Liter Tipo F131 V8 engine paired to a six-speed F1 sequential transaxle. It features four-wheel disc brakes with silver-finished Ferrari-branded calipers, quad exhaust outlets, a tool kit, a tire inflator kit/storage bag, 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels with Pirelli P Zero tires, and a fully powered blue convertible soft top.

Inside, enjoy air conditioning, power windows, a touchscreen stereo w/rearview cam, dual-side rearview mirrors, a glove box, a three-spoke steering wheel, and a center console for convenience. This example is accompanied by an owner’s manual, service book, copies of service receipts, and a clean CARFAX report for added peace of mind.

This 2001 Ferrari 360 Spider has received $32,453.31 in preventative maintenance and mechanical work from April 2023 to December 2025. Major services include an engine-out belt service and hydraulic ram repair (June 2023), a top-end overhaul with 40 lifters and a new water pump (June 2024), and new convertible top cylinders (June 2025). A full fluid service and diagnostic check were completed in December 2025, leaving the car sorted and ready for its next owner.

The 360 Spider was one of the first Ferraris to extensively use aluminum in its chassis and body panels, making it lighter and more agile than its predecessors. With Italian classics like this appreciating steadily, this example is a prime opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts alike, and it is mechanically sound.

And our 360 Spider is the perfect car you require next time you are pottering around Modena and its sumptuous environs…
