Car Tales: Granny Takes A Trip, The Maybach 57 S Zeppelin

‘Shortly before the outset of World War 2, a German Zeppelin airship was seen prowling along California’s Pacific coastline.
‘Although there had already been a significant hindrance, at the time this was the ultimate in high-end traveling.

‘We don’t have such an airship presently on sale at Beverly Hills Car Club. But we do have a 2010 Maybach 57 S Zeppelin, which essentially has the same origins, although now it is part of the revered Mercedes group.
‘But we will come back to that.

‘Zeppelin airships were named after the company that produced them, originally founded by Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin in 1908. During the 1930s these airships carried out transatlantic commercial passenger flights, from Germany to both North and South America. But the company’s fortunes soured following the tragedy of the Hindenburg disaster on May 6, 1937 at Manchester Township, New Jersey in the USA: the airship caught fire whilst landing with a loss of 35 lives.
‘The Maybach company, founded by Wilhelm Maybach and his son Karl in 1909, had produced the engines for Zeppelin airships – they were not responsible in any way for the Hindenburg cataclysm. The company originally developed and manufactured diesel and petrol engines for Zeppelins, and then rail cars. Its Maybach Mb.IVa was used in aircraft and airships of World War I.
‘The company first built an experimental car in 1919, introduced as a production model two years later at the Berlin Motor Show. Between 1921 and 1940, the company produced a variety of opulent vehicles, now regarded as classics. The company also continued to build heavy-duty diesel engines for marine and rail purposes. Maybach also had a British subsidiary, Maybach Gears Ltd, that specialized in gearboxes.
‘The Maybach Zeppelin was the Maybach company’s top model from 1929 to 1939, an enormous luxury vehicle which weighed approximately 3,000 kg (6,600 lb). This weight was so great that German drivers required an additional goods vehicle license for vehicles over 2½ tons. Along with the French Voisin, and behind the Daimler Double Six, this was Europe’s joint second luxury V12 car in production, and a top speed of 171 km/h (106 mph) was possible.
‘In August 2012, a 1938 DS8 Roadster sold for €1.3 million at auction; it was fitted with a rare Variorex eight-speed gearbox (both the first 8-speed and first 8-speed manual gearbox) with a vacuum shift, thought to be one of only 100 built.

‘When Maybach was revived as a brand by DaimlerChrysler, old Maybachs, particularly the opulent 8-liter Zeppelin, saw new popularity as part of a marketing effort which sought to link the current brand with the heritage of the original car company. This resurrecting of the classic name resulted in increased visibility and popularity of well-restored or preserved Maybachs.
‘In 1960 Maybach had been acquired by Daimler-Benz. The name returned as a standalone ultra-luxury car brand in 2002, sharing significant components with Mercedes-Benz cars. After slow sales, Maybach ceased to be a standalone brand by 2013, and it became in 2015 a sub-brand of Mercedes-Benz.

CARFAX 1-owner vehicle per ‘Carfax’ report.
‘In addition to the equipment, with this ultra-luxury-sedan comes the owner’s manual booklet and service receipt copies totaling over $22,000 that has been invested into the vehicle dating from March 2018 through January 2023. This an extremely rare opportunity to be a part of a select very few to acquire a limited edition Maybach 57 S Zeppelin that is in spectacular condition and is mechanically sound.
‘This car is a complete trip!
‘And you’ll notice that at no point have I mentioned a certain immensely popular and rather magnificent rock group…
