Car Tales: King Of The Road, 1965 Mercedes-Benz 220SEb Cabriolet

‘This is such a gorgeous car, and also so exciting.
‘Especially when you learn that there is reason for us to believe that its original owner was none other than Jerry Lewis, that figure in global popular culture once dubbed ‘The King of Comedy.’

‘Anyway, here’s some historical stuff…In 1946, with singer Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis formed the comedy duo Martin and Lewis – Dino was the straight man to Lewis’s wacky antics; together they starred in 14 movies.

‘After they parted in 1956 Jerry Lewis showed his individual mettle, becoming a top-grossing film and TV star – he starred in 60 films and directed 13 – and recording artist.
‘He also famously hosted The Jerry Lewis Telethon, raising $2.6 billion for sufferers of muscular dystrophy. Among his many claims to greatness, Jerry Lewis, who passed away in Las Vegas in 2017, was – and still is – a huge star in France, a country known for its intense cultural taste. Oh la la!
‘Whatever, this Mercedes-Benz 220SEb Cabriolet, an original from the Golden State that was built in 1965, is in a splendid condition. ‘This is a highly-desirable 220SEb Cabriolet that is in excellent condition and available in a gorgeous color scheme as well as being mechanically sound.
‘The Mercedes-Benz W111 was a chassis code given to a range of Mercedes vehicles produced between 1959 and 1971, including four-door sedans (1959-1968) and two-door coupés and cabriolets (1961 to 1971).
‘And sixty or so years ago the 220SEb very rapidly seemed the physical manifestation of the post-World War II German economic miracle, almost literally the engine behind the fastest growing economy in Europe.
‘The Mercedes Benz 220SEb Cabriolet first debuted in February 1961 to celebrate the re-opening of the Daimler-Benz Museum in Stuttgart and the 75th anniversary of Mercedes.
‘The lineup would see more than a decade of production with very little changes over the years. The 220SE designation was used for both the coupe and convertible: both received the same version of the 2195 cc M127 engine. Only 2729 of the 16,902 Mercedes Benz 220SEb models ever produced were Cabriolet models.

‘The Coupé and Cabriolet would continue until 1971, with the 280SE of 1967 and the 280SE 3.5 of 1969, sophisticated, reborn Germany at its height, motor-cars perfect for hurtling along the nation’s autobahns – which had no speed limit imposed on them.
‘These were two-door Mercedes-Benz grand tourers that were the height of perfection.
