Car Tales: Masterpiece! Maserati 5000 GT

‘Dissonance is transformed into harmony in the Maserati 5000 GT.’
So ran the press blurb put out by Maserati for its astonishing 5000 GT, of which there were only a total of 34 ever produced, from 1959-1966. These thirty-four Maserati 5000 GTs were the last individually specified and bodied gran turismos in Maserati’s history.

These thirty-four Maserati 5000 GTs were the last individually specified and bodied gran turismos in Maserati’s eminent history. Each of these luxury cars is a splendid statement melding luxury and breathtaking performance in the fastest, most sumptuous and unique grand tourers of their age. But without the intervention of an extremely regal figure, in the person of the Shah (‘Shah’ means ‘king’) of Persia, the 5000 GT almost certainly would never have appeared.
In November 1958 the Shah tested one of the new Maserati 3500 GTs. But he found the vehicle to be significantly lacking, notably in the performance area.

After he deemed that the car required a more puissant engine, Maserati engineer Giulio Alferi set to work, drawing on the racing technology of the Maserati 450S, a racing car employed by such legendary drivers as Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss.
Then Maserati had a body for this new development drawn and created by Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera. After Maserati fitted the Shah of Persia’s vehicle with a Carrozzeria body, the Maserati 5000GT blessed the high end of motoring with its birth. The first series was equipped with a 4-speed ZF gearbox, and the second with a 5-speed gearbox and three adjustable windows on the doors
Not that Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera built all these supercars, which ended up in the possession of the world’s crème de la crème. Amongst those who were entranced by the power, steering, ability, luxury and individuality of the 5000 GT were such emblems of global power as the aforementioned Shah Reza Pahlavi, Fiat founder Giovanni Agnelli, the U.S. entrepreneur and sportsman Briggs Cunningham, the Italian industrialist Ferdinando Innocenti, Mexican President Lopez Mateos, American actor Stewart Granger, and politician and ultimate playboy Karin Aga Khan.
In fact the lion’s share of 5000 GT bodywork was built by Carrozzeria Allemano.
22 of the total 34 cars in the two different series benefitted from Allemano’s subtle refining of the character of these magnificent cars.

Allemano’s 5000 GTs’ amendments to Carrozzeria Touring’s work – the transmogrification of the original 5000 GT into a motoring masterpiece – were a long hood and tail capped by a huge wraparound rear window, giving exceptional visibility, chief designer Carlo Anderloni clearly inspired by Persian Baroque architecture. Hence the distinctive grille and interior, a reflection of the opulence and sophistication of the era. Within the space created at the rear of the car, 2+2 seating easily could be accommodated, like a justification of the entire notion of gran turisimo.
It is one of these 22 Allemano cars – 22 of only 34 ever made, please remember , making this particular car a highly sought-after and exclusive collector’s item – that we presently have at Beverly Hills Car Club, a magnificent 1962 Maserati 5000 GT Coupe featuring Allemano coachwork. And don’t forget that Eagle Joe Walsh was so inspired by his Maserati 5000 GT that he even wrote a hit song about it:
My Maserati does one-eighty-five
I lost my license, now I don’t drive
I have a limo, ride in the back
I lock the doors in case I’m attacked
