Car Tales: Motoring Masterpiece, Mercedes-Benz 300S

As we are entering the season of good will, I have decided not to use my blog to discuss a car in my present Beverly Hills Car Club inventory, but to reflect instead on a motoring masterpiece I sold at the Amelia Island Auction at the Fernandina Beach Golf Club. How could I not? Just look at these pictures of the car I am referring to, a majestic 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300S Coupe, in a stunning special factory color Silver Grey Metallic: utter breathtaking magnificence.

This exceptional vehicle, often referred to as ‘The Car of the World’s Elite,’ represents the epitome of luxury and elegance. As part of the esteemed 300 Series, which stood as the pinnacle of Mercedes-Benz in the 1950s, this coupe is a true testament to the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship and innovation.

It marked Mercedes-Benz’s post-war era return to designing high-performance luxury cars, reaffirming its position among prestigious manufacturers.

Aimed directly at established competition such as the BMW 501, it became one of the most opulent prestige cars of the decade.

It is also extremely rare. Only 216 examples of the Mercedes-Benz 300S Coupe were hand-built between 1952 and 1955, making this particular model a highly sought-after collector’s item.

Owning such a limited edition vehicle not only guarantees a sense of prestige but also ensures that you are part of an elite group of enthusiasts who appreciate the finest craftsmanship and engineering.

This particular vehicle had had the privilege of being in the possession of the same owner from Arizona since 1993, a testament to its exceptional quality and desirability. With a rich history and a well-documented provenance, this Mercedes-Benz carries a sense of exclusivity and uniqueness that is truly rare to find. In such a car you truly feel you have arrived.

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the 300 sedan, its first new post-war flagship sedan, at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1951.

An imposing statement of European luxury, featuring graceful modernist bodywork, the elegant 300 sedan was offered as either a four-door sedan or four-door full convertible. Praised by the press and buying public for its exceptional engineering and build quality, it soon became a favorite among celebrities, businessmen, financiers, and politicians in West Germany, including the country’s Chancellor Konrad Adenauer.

Indeed, the Mercedes-Benz was jokingly known as the ‘Adenauer’ after the German Chancellor became a prominent customer.

Technologically advanced, the 300 was regarded as a ‘driver’s’ car, sharing numerous design innovations and mechanical components with the iconic Mercedes-Benz 300SL ‘Gullwing’, including engine, suspension, and chassis. An innovative dashboard-operated rear load-leveling suspension engaged a torsion bar to increase stiffness by one-third when needed, and a pedal-operated central lubrication system kept friction points silent.

Mercedes-Benz followed with a more sporting version, the 300S – the ‘S’ denoting it as Super.

The 300S chassis was shortened by 25 centimeters and offered as an elegant coupe, a beautiful open-topped cabriolet, or a disappearing-top roadster, all built at the renowned Sindelfingen factory. Lighter and more powerful than the saloon, the two-seater 300S had a 110mph top speed.

Lighter and more powerful than the saloon, the two-seater 300S had a 110mph top speed.

In essence, the 300S was the post-war spiritual successor to the legendary 540K, first built in 1936. The S-specification cars featured an uprated 3.0-liter inline-six with 3 Solex carburetors and a boosted compression ratio to 150 horsepower, up from the standard car’s 115. The engine is backed by a smooth and reliable four-speed manual with a delightfully slick column shift.

Powered by the high-performance M188 straight-6, it was engineered for durability and innovation including deeper water jackets, thermostatic oil cooling, copper-lead bearings and a hardened crankshaft.

With no natural cruising speed, the car could sustain up to 110 mph all day, road conditions permitting. Beyond its power, the 300S boasted a lavishly equipped interior with leather upholstery, burr walnut trim, chromium-plated dashboard instrumentation, and precision switchgear.

The suspension is independent in front with a swing axle arrangement in the rear, sprung with coils. While tuned for comfort, the 300S is still a respectable handler and is impressively poised at speed.

The solid road feel and opulent appointments made the 300S a very special place to spend time. Exclusivity was assured but it came with a price: a whopping $12,680 in 1953 – about twice the price of a new Cadillac. Notable 300S owners included Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, and The Aga Khan, who all could easily afford the cost of entry into the exclusive club of a car made for the world’s elite.

When you were the proud possessor of such a car, there was one thing of which you could be certain: You were on top of the world!
