Car Tales: Prancing Horse Magnificence, Ferrari 328GTS

‘Ferrari: an Italian myth! The history of the prancing horse, among victories, myths and legends of the four wheels. A family that became a racing stable. More than just cars, but luxury instruments created to experience emotions with a load of adrenaline.’

Wonderful! In attempting to sum up the archetypal appeal of the very name of Ferrari, I couldn’t put it better. And here the VisitItaly.eu website – which I heartily recommend – is so perfect, even adding a subtle spice of its own self-adoration…

And so it continues: ‘There is nothing more Italian than a bright red Ferrari. A sporty yet luxurious car. A car suitable for the red carpet of social events, or sporting events and classic car rallies. Ferrari is like a diamond: it is forever! Whoever travels in a Ferrari has a unique experience. Sports car enthusiasts swear they have never experienced anything like it when they get behind the wheel of a Ferrari. The high speed, the rapidity, the thunderous roar of the engine.

All factors that release adrenaline and serotonin into our bodies: the molecule of happiness. Ferrari is a legend that speaks Italian, but travels in the world. It is almost 100 years old and bears the name of Enzo Ferrari, the founding father of one of the most important racing teams and car manufacturers in the world.’

But the VisitItaly website misses out something, a quintessential quote from the great Enzo Ferrari himself, one redolent of the kind of modesty that is requisite for true great success: ‘The best machine is one that has yet to be built.’

However, at Beverly Hills Car Club right now we have the next best thing – and it even comes in that so desirable bright red color. Considered by some enthusiasts to be one of the most reliable and functional Ferraris, the 328GTS bears a distinct advantage: unlike other Ferrari models, much of its maintenance can be performed without lowering the engine from the vehicle.

Oh, and what’s in its 328 name? Everything: the ’32’ numbers in the model title define the total cubic capacity of the engine, 3.2 liters, and the ‘8’ references the number of cylinders.

Considered as one of the most usable classic Ferraris, the 328 is so assessed because of its durable road record, history of appreciating value, and classical aesthetics.

The 308 and 328 are viewed as a family of Ferrari road cars as they share similar – though not identical – body designs and appearances, chassis, and engine designs. Essentially the new 328 model was a revised and updated version of the 308, which had survived for eight years without any radical change to the overall shape, albeit with various changes to the 3-liter engine. And the 328 was the final evolution of the transversely mid-mounted, conventionally aspirated 90 degree V8 Dino engine. The transversely mounted engine is a popular way to save space on the rear-mid, rear wheel drive layout.

The 328 model remained in production for four years, from 1985 to 1989. By the time it was replaced by the 348 in the fall of 1989, a total of 7,412 vehicles had been made. GTS production totaled 6,068 vehicles in the chassis number range of 59301 to 83136.

GTS production outnumbered the GTB version almost five to one.

The GTB appellation referred to the Gran Turismo Berlinetta fixed roof coupe body while the GTS was a Gran Turismo Spider, with a targa top. In 1985, the 328 retailed from $58,400 to $62,500 in the United States.

It is a GTS that we have at the moment at Beverly Hills Car Club, a 1986 Ferrari 328GTS featured with 38,615 miles on the odometer and finished in its factory color Rossa Corsa complemented with a Tan interior.

The supercar is equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission, 8-cylinder engine, four-wheel disc brakes, quad exhaust outlets, Veglia instruments, a gated shifter, removable roof panel, retractable headlights, side strakes, Pininfarina badge, MOMO steering wheel, side marker lights, overhead spoiler, louvered rear quarter windows, 5-spoke alloy wheels wearing Bridgestone Potenza tires, tool roll, jack, and a full-size spare tire fitted in the front trunk.

Amenities include air conditioning, electric windows, power mirrors, door pockets, a cigar lighter with an ashtray, AM/FM radio, and sun visors with a vanity mirror on the passenger side. In addition to the equipment, this two-seater Italian sports car comes with an owner’s manual booklet, and service receipt copies totaling over $19,500 that has been invested into the vehicle dating from November 2008 through February 2018. This is an extremely desirable Pininfarina-designed Italian sports car that is mechanically sound.

Pass the pasta, please: it is simply utterly delicious…
