The Bentley Mark VI 4-door standard steel sports saloon was produced by Bentley from 1946 until 1952. Announced in May 1946 it was also both the first car from Rolls-Royce with all-steel coachwork and the first complete car assembled and finished at their factory. It was the first post-war luxury car from Bentley. These very expensive cars – the ex-factory price was £2595, much more at the time than a house in London’s Chelsea – were a genuine success. But they weren’t all finished at the factory.

Chassis continued to be supplied to independent coachbuilders, which produced four-door saloon, two-door saloon and drophead coupe models. Buyers could opt for a sumptuous specialist custom finish from the likes of Hooper & Co., as is the case with the Mark VI we have at Beverly Hills Car Club.
In 1944 Rolls-Royce executive W. A. Robotham had intuited that there would be limited postwar demand for a Rolls-Royce or Bentley rolling chassis with a body from a specialist coachbuilder. Accordingly, he negotiated with the Pressed Steel Company a contract for a general-purpose body to carry four people in comfort on their postwar chassis behind a Rolls-Royce or Bentley radiator. Though he stretched the demand to 2000 per year, Pressed Steel were nonplussed by what they considered a small demand for the car that was given the name Bentley Mark VI Standard Steel Sports Saloon. This shorter wheelbase chassis and engine was a variant of the Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith of 1946 and, with the same standard steel body, became the cautiously introduced Silver Dawn of 1949. In 1952 both Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn and Bentley Mk VI standard steel bodies were modified to incorporate a trunk of about twice the size and the result became known as the R type Bentley based on the chassis number at which the change took place.
Today the Bentley is a favorite of flashy hip-hop artists. However, Bentley still enjoys a more discreet reputation than other marques in the same price range. Bentley owners enjoy life, the way life should be enjoyed. Usually with several houses and the Bentley rarely being the only car in the garage.
In Ian Fleming’s novels James Bond drove a Bentley 4½ with an Amherst Villiers supercharger.
And when the UK’s Queen Elizabeth II traveled by car in official capacities, she did so in her Bentley State Limousine.

Due to small production numbers and their aura of quintessential classiness, Bentley cars are sought after and command great value: noted car collector Ralph Lauren has a ‘Blower’ Bentley 4½ liter, which replaced the Bentley 3 liter in 1929, in his stable of rare cars.
Will Ralph Lauren be after the 1948 Bentley Mark VI Hooper Drophead Convertible we have at Beverly Hills Car Club?
You never know: after all, this Hooper special is one of only three built.
